John 3 – Discussion Questions

1. Why do you think a Pharasee, a person high in the Jewish church, would visit Jesus?
2. Why do you think it is significant that he visited him at night?
3. Why does Nicodemus say he came to Jesus? (v.2)
4. Why do you think Jesus says in verse 3 that one must be born again, what does this mean?
5. Why does Jesus react so strongly to Nicodemus in verse 10?
6. What do you think Jesus means by comparing himself to the serpant lifted by Moses in the desert? (for more on this story of Moses see Numbers 21)
7. Why does verse 15 say Jesus must be “lifted up”?
8. Verse 16 is a famous verse that many memorize when they are children. What does this verse mean to you?
9. What does verses 17-18 mean when they say that those who believe in Christ are not condemned and those that do not are condemned?
10. Why do you think people love darkness (sin) more than the light (Christ)?
11. How does verse 21 say we can live in the light?
12. If verse 29 says Jesus is the bridgegroom (or groom) then who is his bride?
13. How can what John says in verse 30 apply to our lives today?
14. If Jesus is above all (vs. 31), what can that mean for the things we deal with in life?

John 2 Study Questions

1. Why do you think it is a cool thing that Jesus was at a wedding?
2. Why do you think Jesus’ mom asked him to help with the lack of wine?
3. What do you think Jesus means when he says to her: “my time has not yet come?”
4. Why do you think Jesus’ mother commanded the servants to do whatever Jesus told them? What do you think this says about Jesus’ mother’s faith in him and what he could do?
5. Why do you think Jesus used the water jars that were there to do what he did?
6. What do you think the servants felt after the master of the feast complemented the “water” that was now wine? (Since they knew what had happened)
7. If the disciples put their faith in Christ for this small miracle, why do you think it is hard for people to believe in him now?
8. Why do you think that people were making money and selling things at the temple?
9. Why do you think this upset Jesus so much?
10. What do you think the temple is supposed to be? How were the people hurting that?
11. What did Jesus mean by they could destroy the temple and he could rebuild it in three days?
12. What do you think John means when he says that Jesus knew what was in a man? What does that mean for us today?

Read through the chapter carefully and answer the questions. You can do this individually, over the phone or even through Facebook chat. At the end of the month when we meet at the church we will discuss the questions and your answers!

John Chapter 1

1.Who is John talking about when he says “the Word?” What roles does the Word play in the creation of the world?

2.Who is John the Baptist? What was his mission (what was he on earth to do)?

3.Did the world expect Jesus to come? Why do you think the world did not expect him to come? Why do you think everyone was caught off guard by the way Jesus came?

4.What does verse 17 mean when it says that he Law was given to Moses? What do you think it means when it says that “grace and truth come from Jesus”?

5.Why do you think John did not say he was the Messiah? He could have gained great power through doing so but did not. Why?

6.How can John’s mission in verse 23 also be our mission as Christians?

7.Why do you think John felt so unworthy to baptize Jesus?

8.What do you think the spirit of the dove symbolizes in verse 32?

9.What do you think it means when it says that Jesus “baptizes with the Holy Spirit?” (If the Holy Spirit brings us closer to God, what does it mean when we are baptizes in the Holy Spirit?)

10.What did Andrew do as soon as he met Jesus and realized who he was? Why is this important? How was Peter’s life changed by what his brother did? How can this relate to us?

11.What kinds of things do you think Jesus meant when he told Nathaniel that he would “see greater things than these?”

12.What does it mean for Jesus to both be the “Son of God” and the “Son of Man”?

So... How is this Going to Work?

We are trying something new this semester with our Bible Study by offering it both online and in person. Each Sunday starting September 3, we will post a few questions for a few chapters at a time. You can write those questions or print them out and answer them each week as you read. Each month we will meet together and discuss what you have been reading and your answers to the questions over baked goods and hot drinks (when it gets cold outside!)
